The Picts were a group of Celtic people who lived in Northern Scotland during the Early Middle Ages. Pictish symbols were based on tattoos the Pictish tribes used to decorate their bodies with that had many symbolic or magical properties. These symbols were transferred onto mundane objects such as jewelry, shields, and doorposts, before finally ending up on symbol stones. Common symbols included animals, such as the salmon, deer, and bull; birds such as the eagle and goose, and “monsters” such as the infamous Pictish Beast, and more enigmatic designs such as the crescent and V rod, comb and mirror, and double disk.
